Do you need antenatal care package after preconception care?

Preconception care takes place before pregnancy. It can review long-term conditions, medicines, vaccinations, lifestyle, family history, and preparation for conception. Once pregnancy begins, antenatal care takes over as the regular programme for monitoring your health and the baby's development.

Antenatal appointments may include blood-pressure checks, urine checks, blood tests, ultrasound appointments, discussions about symptoms, and planning for birth. The schedule and package depend on your health, pregnancy history, and maternity service.

Contact your obstetrician, midwife, or maternity clinic when you know you are pregnant, even if you recently completed a preconception visit. Share the date of your last menstrual period, your preconception plan, current medicines and supplements, and any advice you were given. Ask when the first antenatal appointment should occur and which tests are recommended.

Do not stop prescribed medicine without clinical advice. If a preconception plan included folic acid, treatment for a medical condition, or a vaccination plan, ask how it should continue during pregnancy.

Seek prompt maternity advice for vaginal bleeding, one-sided or severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting with difficulty keeping fluids down, fever, painful urination, or a severe headache with vision changes. Later in pregnancy, report reduced fetal movement using your unit's instructions. Emergency symptoms such as heavy bleeding, collapse, or severe breathing difficulty need urgent help.

Ask: When should my antenatal care begin? Which appointments and scans are needed? Should my medicines or supplements change? Does my medical history alter the schedule? Who should I contact between visits if symptoms appear?
