Do you need amniocentesis after NIPT?

NIPT analyses small fragments of placental DNA in a blood sample and estimates the chance of selected chromosomal conditions. It is a screening test, so a higher-chance result does not establish a diagnosis, and a lower-chance result does not assess every possible condition.

Amniocentesis uses a sample of amniotic fluid for laboratory analysis. It is an invasive diagnostic procedure and has its own considerations. Your clinician may discuss it after a higher-chance NIPT result, an ultrasound finding, or a relevant family or pregnancy history. You can ask about alternatives and choose whether to proceed.

Ask your obstetrician or a genetics professional to explain exactly what the NIPT result covered, whether it was reportable, and what the result means for your pregnancy. Do not make decisions based on the screening label alone. Discuss diagnostic testing, the timing of any procedure, possible results, and how each result could affect pregnancy care.

If amniocentesis is recommended, ask how the procedure is performed, what symptoms should prompt contact afterwards, and when results are expected. A second opinion can help if the decision feels difficult.

After amniocentesis, contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, fever, worsening abdominal pain, regular contractions, or feeling unwell. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or breathing difficulty. A screening result itself is not an emergency, but it should be reviewed within the timeframe your clinician recommends.
