Do you need allergy medication after allergy testing?

A positive test shows sensitisation to a particular substance; it must be considered alongside your symptoms and exposure history. If your symptoms are mild or the trigger is avoidable, reducing exposure may be enough. Ongoing nose, eye, skin or breathing symptoms may call for a clinician-recommended medicine. Testing may also be negative or inconclusive, so do not start, stop or change treatment from the result alone.

Review the result with the clinician who arranged the test and ask which findings match your symptoms. Discuss practical trigger avoidance, the correct medicine, how to use it and when to review it. Keep a record of exposures and reactions, especially if symptoms vary at home, work or outdoors. Follow any instructions about medicines that were paused for testing before restarting them.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, widespread hives with rapid worsening, or repeated vomiting after an exposure. Arrange medical review for persistent wheezing, night symptoms, skin infection, or reactions that are becoming more severe or harder to control.
