Do you need an abdominal ultrasound after a GP consultation?

A GP may recommend ultrasound to examine organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas or spleen, or to investigate certain abdominal symptoms. The decision depends on your history, examination findings and previous tests. An ultrasound uses sound waves and does not use ionising radiation, but it cannot answer every abdominal question, so another test or observation may be more suitable.

Follow the preparation instructions from the imaging service; these may include fasting or arriving with a comfortably full bladder. Ask where to go, whether you need a referral or appointment, and how results will reach the clinician who requested the scan. Continue prescribed medicines unless the service specifically gives different instructions. Do not wait for a routine scan if abdominal pain is severe or rapidly worsening, or if it occurs with fainting, repeated vomiting, a rigid abdomen, heavy bleeding, yellow skin, black stools or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need urgent clinical assessment, regardless of whether an ultrasound has been arranged.
