Do you need a referral for vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty is a procedure that changes or creates vaginal structures. An initial consultation usually covers your goals, medical history, medicines, previous operations, sexual and reproductive health, and the expected recovery. A referral can come from a general practitioner, gynaecologist, or another clinician involved in your care. Some specialist clinics accept self-referrals, while others ask for a referral before scheduling an assessment.

A referral is not the same as approval for surgery. The specialist still needs to decide whether the procedure is appropriate, explain alternatives and possible complications, and discuss preparation and follow-up.

Contact the clinic before asking for a referral and ask whether self-booking is available, which clinician can refer you, what records are useful, and whether an assessment can be arranged without committing to treatment. Bring a list of medicines, allergies, previous procedures, and relevant health conditions. Ask how the clinic handles consultations, consent, recovery planning, and follow-up appointments.

If you are considering vaginoplasty for gender affirmation, pelvic symptoms, injury, or another reason, say so plainly; the assessment pathway and specialist team may differ.

Arrange a prompt medical review for new vaginal bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, difficulty passing urine, or a wound that is opening after a procedure. These symptoms need assessment rather than a routine referral discussion. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe weakness, or trouble breathing.
