Do you need a referral for vaginal dilator therapy?

Dilators are graduated devices used with guidance to help the vaginal tissues and pelvic floor become more comfortable with touch or insertion. The reason for treatment might include pelvic floor overactivity, pain with penetration, scarring, or treatment-related changes. A clinician can check that dilator therapy is appropriate and explain how to avoid forcing insertion.

Ask your family doctor, gynaecologist, oncology team, or other treating clinician whether a referral is needed in your area. You may be directed to a pelvic health physiotherapist. At the first visit, describe pain, bleeding, dryness, prior procedures, and what you hope to do comfortably. Use only the size, lubricant, pace, and schedule recommended for you; discomfort should not be treated as a target to push through.

Stop and contact your clinician if insertion causes sharp or worsening pain, fresh bleeding that does not settle, unusual discharge, fever, or pelvic pain that continues afterward. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or feeling very unwell.

Ask who should supervise treatment, how often to practise, which lubricant is suitable, how to clean the device, and what symptoms mean you should pause.
