Do you need a referral for vaginal delivery?

Vaginal delivery is a birth route, not usually a separate procedure that requires its own referral. A midwife, family doctor, obstetrician, or maternity clinic may start your care and arrange pregnancy assessments. The route can depend on whether your pregnancy is straightforward, whether you have a medical condition, and which hospital or clinic you choose.

Contact your preferred maternity provider as soon as you know you are pregnant, or ask your current doctor how to book. Explain your previous pregnancies, medicines, health conditions, and any symptoms. Ask whether you can self-book, whether a doctor must refer you, and which records or test results the service needs. If your care needs change, the team may arrange obstetric review without changing your preference for vaginal birth.

Seek urgent maternity or emergency care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leaking from the vagina, painful regular contractions before your expected time, reduced fetal movement, severe headache with vision changes, or sudden breathlessness. Referral arrangements are administrative; urgent symptoms need prompt clinical assessment.

Ask who will coordinate your pregnancy care, how to reach the maternity unit, which appointments are routine, and what circumstances would lead to an obstetric consultation.
