Do You Need a Referral for a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is an operation that removes selected excess skin and may repair or tighten separated abdominal muscles. A consultation is needed to assess your abdominal wall, skin quality, scars, general health and expectations before deciding whether the procedure is suitable.

Some private surgical practices allow patients to request a consultation directly. A hospital, insurer or surgical facility may use a referral process for administrative, medical or pre-operative reasons. The referral itself does not determine whether you need surgery; the examination and health review do.

Ask the practice whether you can self-book, which clinician should refer you, and whether the consultation is separate from the operation. Tell the team about previous abdominal surgery, pregnancies, smoking, medicines, bleeding problems and plans for future pregnancy.

At consultation, expect discussion of the scar position, recovery, wound care, activity restrictions and possible alternatives. Bring details of previous operations and a current medicine list. A surgeon may request medical clearance or tests when your history makes them relevant.

Seek medical advice before pursuing an elective consultation if you have an unexplained abdominal lump, severe abdominal pain, an infected wound, sudden swelling or breathing symptoms. These problems need assessment on their own and should not be treated as a cosmetic concern.

Ask whether your concern is mainly loose skin, muscle separation or another issue, what result is realistic for your body, where the scar will sit, and how existing scars may affect the plan. Ask who will provide aftercare and which symptoms require urgent contact.
