Tuberculosis screening may use a blood test such as an IGRA, a skin test such as a Mantoux test, or further assessment when a result or symptoms require clarification. The right route depends on why you are being screened, your previous test history, and whether you have received a tuberculosis vaccine. A clinic may accept direct bookings for screening, while an employer, school, immigration service, or healthcare facility may specify an approved provider.

A positive screening result does not by itself describe whether tuberculosis is active. A clinician may arrange an examination, chest imaging, or other tests to understand the result.

Ask the testing provider whether self-booking is available and what documentation is required. Explain whether screening follows a known exposure, workplace or immigration requirement, planned treatment that affects immunity, or symptoms. Bring prior results and disclose pregnancy, immune problems, and medicines. If a referral is requested, a general-practice clinician can review your history and direct you to the appropriate service.

Contact a clinician promptly after close contact with someone who has infectious tuberculosis, especially if you have a weakened immune system. Seek urgent assessment for coughing blood, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. A persistent cough, fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss also deserves medical review rather than screening alone.
