Call the intended orthopedic service and ask whether it accepts self-referrals. If not, arrange a visit with your primary-care doctor or current clinician. Bring imaging reports, a medication list, and notes about stairs, work, sleep, and activities affected by knee symptoms. Check whether your health plan asks for a referral or approval before specialist care.

Get urgent medical advice for a knee that becomes suddenly very swollen or deformed, a hot joint with fever, inability to stand after an injury, or a cold, pale, numb, or weak foot. These signs need timely evaluation and are not simply routine replacement paperwork.
