Do you need a referral for under-eye filler?

Tear-trough filler places an injectable material in a delicate area beneath the lower eyelid. During a consultation, the clinician looks at hollowness, skin quality, puffiness, asymmetry, pigmentation, and the relationship between the lower eyelid and cheek. Dark circles or bags may have causes that filler will not address, so treatment may not be appropriate for every concern.

Some aesthetic clinics accept direct enquiries, whereas a medical service may request a referral or additional assessment. A referral is separate from the clinician’s decision about whether the procedure is suitable.

Ask the provider who will perform the injection, whether a referral is needed, what product is proposed, and how complications would be managed. Tell the clinician about eye disease, previous injections, allergies, medicines that affect bleeding, and any planned dental or facial procedures.

Do not book treatment based only on a photograph. An in-person examination helps the clinician distinguish volume loss from swelling or skin changes and allows time for a balanced discussion of alternatives, expected changes, and aftercare.

Seek urgent medical attention after an injection for sudden vision change, severe eye pain, marked swelling, unusual skin colour, weakness, or difficulty speaking. Contact the provider for worsening redness, warmth, pus, or pain that continues to increase.

Ask about the clinician’s relevant training, whether your concern is hollowness or swelling, the product and injection plan, alternatives, expected recovery, and the emergency pathway for vision symptoms.
