A pain-management specialist reviews the pain diagnosis, previous treatments, medicines, physical function, and relevant medical history. The team may involve other clinicians and may discuss a temporary trial before any long-term implant. Referral is therefore part of a careful selection and planning process, not a promise that the device will be recommended.

Speak with the doctor managing your persistent pain and ask whether a referral to pain management is appropriate. Prepare a list of treatments tried, their effects, current medicines, prior operations, scans, and how pain affects sleep, movement, and daily activities. Ask the receiving service which records are needed and whether psychological or medical assessments form part of its pathway.

Do not wait for a routine referral if back or limb pain is accompanied by new weakness, numbness around the inner thighs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty walking. Fever, a recent serious injury, or rapidly worsening symptoms also needs prompt medical assessment. These signs may require urgent treatment for a cause that stimulation would not address.

Ask what pain source is being treated, why stimulation is being considered, and what alternatives remain. Discuss the trial process, possible device care, follow-up, activity restrictions, and what would happen if the trial does not improve function or comfort.
