Do You Need a Referral for Skin Boosters?

Skin boosters are injectable products used to improve skin hydration or texture in selected areas. They are not a substitute for diagnosing a rash, infection, pigment change, or suspicious lesion. A qualified clinician should review your goals, skin condition, allergies, medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any history of unusual scarring or reactions before treatment.

Some providers accept direct bookings for an assessment. Others ask for a referral, particularly when symptoms suggest a medical skin problem or when a health-plan pathway applies. The requirement is administrative; it does not decide whether treatment is suitable.

Ask the provider whether you can book a consultation directly and whether the consultation is separate from the injection appointment. If a health plan is involved, confirm its referral or approval process. Tell the clinician about active acne, eczema, cold sores, skin infection, recent procedures, allergies, medicines, and previous injectable treatments. Ask what product is being used, where it will be placed, and how the provider handles follow-up.

Choose an appointment with enough time for assessment and consent. Do not book an injection solely from a photograph or a short online exchange when the skin concern has not been examined.

Seek medical assessment before an aesthetic injection if the area is hot, painful, rapidly swollen, oozing, crusted, or affected by a spreading rash. After treatment, urgent help is needed for severe or worsening pain, marked colour change, vision symptoms, weakness, or breathing difficulty. Contact the provider promptly for increasing redness, warmth, pus, or swelling that is not settling.

Ask: Do I need a referral to see you? Is a skin booster appropriate for my concern? What are the expected effects and common short-term reactions? Which warning signs need urgent help? What follow-up is included if the treated area becomes unusually painful or swollen?
