Do you need a referral for scoliosis surgery?

A referral sends your medical information to a service for specialist review. It is not a decision that surgery is necessary. A spine surgeon or paediatric orthopedic team may assess the curve, growth stage, balance, pain, nerve symptoms, and imaging. The team may recommend observation, physiotherapy, bracing, or further tests instead of an operation. For a child or teenager, the referral may be coordinated through a paediatrician, family doctor, or existing scoliosis service.

Contact the scoliosis or spine clinic and ask whether you can book directly or need a referral. Ask your current doctor to include the curve history, examination findings, imaging reports, previous treatment, and any change in walking, strength, or bladder and bowel function. Bring prior scans when possible. If the patient is a child, note changes in posture, growth, school activity, and comfort during daily tasks.

Seek urgent medical assessment for new or worsening leg weakness, loss of sensation, difficulty walking, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. Severe pain after an injury, breathing difficulty, or rapidly changing symptoms also needs prompt attention. These concerns should not wait for a routine referral appointment.

Ask which spine service is appropriate, whether updated standing X-rays are needed, and what the assessment will measure. Ask how growth may affect the plan, which non-surgical options remain available, and which symptoms should lead you to contact the clinic sooner.
