Do you need a referral for rotator cuff repair?

A referral is a request for specialist assessment; it does not mean that surgery has already been recommended. An orthopedic surgeon or sports-medicine specialist usually reviews your shoulder symptoms, strength, movement, examination findings, and imaging before discussing repair. A referral may come from a family doctor, another specialist, or a physiotherapist, according to the clinic’s process. The specialist may also recommend physiotherapy, activity changes, injections, or further imaging if repair is not the right next step.

Call the clinic you plan to use and ask whether a referral is required for an initial consultation. If you already have a doctor, request a referral that includes the shoulder problem, previous treatment, relevant scan reports, and current medicines. Bring imaging discs or reports if available, along with a short account of when the pain began and which movements are difficult. Confirm whether the appointment is for assessment rather than a booking for an operation.

Arrange prompt medical assessment after a major injury if you cannot lift the arm, the shoulder looks deformed, or severe pain started suddenly. Seek urgent help for a cold or blue hand, new numbness or weakness, fever with a hot swollen shoulder, or chest discomfort with shoulder pain. These signs can require a different assessment from a routine surgical referral.

Ask which specialist should assess you, what records should accompany the referral, whether physiotherapy should continue, and what findings would make repair more or less suitable. You can also ask how long the assessment pathway may take and what to do if pain or weakness changes while you wait.
