Do you need a referral for plantar fascia release?

Plantar fascia release reduces tension in part of the tissue under the foot. It is considered only after the cause of heel pain has been assessed and non-surgical care has been explored. An orthopaedic surgeon or podiatry specialist may examine walking, foot strength, nerve symptoms and tenderness, and may review imaging when needed.

Ask your primary-care clinician or foot specialist which referral route applies. Record how long heel pain has lasted, whether first steps are difficult, what footwear changes help, and which exercises, medicines or other treatments you have tried. Mention diabetes, circulation problems, numbness, previous foot surgery and medicines that affect healing. A referral is an assessment step, not an agreement to undergo the procedure.

Arrange prompt medical review for a suddenly swollen or red foot, fever, an open wound, new numbness or weakness, inability to bear weight after injury, or a cold or unusually pale foot. These findings may need a different and faster evaluation.

Ask what is causing the heel pain, why release is being considered, which non-surgical options remain, how the plantar nerves and arch could be affected, and what rehabilitation would involve.
