Do you need a referral for PARP inhibitor therapy?

The route into care depends on the clinic's booking process and whether you already have a medical oncologist. A referral is an access document; it does not by itself establish that this medicine is suitable for you.

PARP inhibitors are prescription cancer medicines managed through medical oncology. The oncologist considers the cancer diagnosis, previous treatment, test results, current medicines, organ function, and your overall health before recommending a particular drug.

Some people are referred by the clinician already coordinating their cancer care. Others can request an oncology appointment directly and then send records before the visit. The receiving facility can tell you which route it accepts.

Call the oncology service and ask whether a written referral is required, which specialty should issue it, and which reports must arrive before booking. Have your pathology report, molecular or genetic test results if available, imaging reports, treatment summary, medicine list, allergies, and recent blood-test results ready.

If another oncologist suggested the treatment, request a concise clinical summary explaining the diagnosis and treatments already received. Do not start, stop, share, or change the dose of an anticancer medicine while arranging another opinion.

Referral paperwork should not delay help for a new severe symptom. Contact your cancer team promptly for fever, unusual bleeding or bruising, marked weakness, persistent vomiting, shortness of breath, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening.

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or bleeding that will not stop. If you are already taking a PARP inhibitor, use the urgent-contact instructions provided by your oncology team.

Ask what feature of your cancer makes this therapy worth considering, whether more testing is needed, how your other medicines affect the plan, which side effects require a same-day call, and how blood tests will be monitored. Also confirm who will prescribe the medicine and coordinate follow-up.
