Do you need a referral for ovarian cancer debulking surgery?

The referral may come from a gynaecologist, medical oncologist, primary care doctor or another hospital team. The receiving centre can explain whether it needs a formal letter, records sent in advance or an initial consultation before surgical planning.

Debulking, or cytoreductive, surgery aims to remove as much visible ovarian cancer as is safely feasible. Planning can involve the ovaries, uterus, bowel lining and other abdominal or pelvic sites, depending on where disease is found. The gynaecologic oncology team reviews imaging, pathology when available, general health and treatment goals before recommending the timing and extent of surgery.

Ask the referring clinician to send imaging reports and images, pathology reports, recent blood results, previous operation notes and a current medicine list. Tell the new team about allergies, other medical conditions and any treatment already received. Confirm the appointment location and whether a family member or interpreter may attend, then write down the symptoms and practical concerns you want addressed.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, marked breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion or heavy bleeding. Increasing abdominal swelling with breathlessness, reduced urine or inability to pass stool or gas also needs prompt assessment. Use the treating team's emergency instructions if they have given you a specific contact route.

Consider asking what information supports the diagnosis, what organs might be involved in the operation and whether treatment is recommended before or after surgery. Clarify likely recovery needs, possible effects on bowel or bladder function, fertility and menopause when relevant, how pain and nausea will be managed, and which symptoms should trigger a call before the planned admission.
