Do you need a referral for a neck lift?

A neck lift, also called platysmaplasty, is discussed with a qualified plastic surgeon who assesses loose skin, neck bands, muscle laxity, skin quality, and your overall goals. The consultation is needed to determine whether a neck lift is suitable and whether another approach would address the concern more appropriately. A referral does not guarantee an operation, and direct booking does not bypass the surgeon’s assessment or consent process.

Call the plastic-surgery clinic before arranging travel or paying a consultation fee. Ask whether a referral is needed, whether a general practitioner can provide it, and which records the surgeon wants to see. Prepare a list of medicines, allergies, previous operations, smoking or nicotine use, and relevant medical conditions. Bring clear questions about anaesthesia, scars, recovery, follow-up, and alternatives. If the procedure is being considered for a medical reason, ask whether a different referral pathway applies.

A neck lift is elective surgery, but a new neck lump, rapidly enlarging swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, unexplained bleeding, or sudden severe pain needs medical assessment rather than an elective cosmetic consultation. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening swelling.
