Do you need a referral for myomectomy?

Myomectomy removes fibroids while aiming to preserve the uterus. A referral usually starts with a primary-care clinician or another doctor who reviews symptoms, examination findings and any imaging. The receiving gynaecology team considers the fibroid location, size, number, bleeding, pressure symptoms and pregnancy plans. They may discuss abdominal, laparoscopic or hysteroscopic approaches. A referral is not the same as approval for an operation; the specialist still needs to recommend a safe and appropriate plan.

Ask your current clinician whether a referral is required at the hospital where you want care. Bring ultrasound or MRI reports, a list of medicines, previous procedures and a record of bleeding or pelvic symptoms. Tell the clinician if preserving fertility matters to you. Before booking, check whether the appointment and surgery require separate authorisations, and ask which documents the facility needs.

Seek urgent medical help for very heavy bleeding with weakness or fainting, sudden severe pelvic pain, fever, or difficulty passing urine. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for a routine referral. For ongoing heavy periods, pelvic pressure or fertility concerns, arrange a non-urgent review so the cause and treatment options can be assessed.

Ask who should provide the referral, which tests are needed, which surgical approach fits your fibroids, how treatment may affect pregnancy, and what recovery support you should arrange.
