Do you need a referral for a musculoskeletal X-ray?

X-rays create images that can show many fractures, joint alignment, dislocation, and some bone or arthritis-related changes. The request identifies the body part and the reason for imaging, such as an injury or persistent joint concern. A clinician uses the examination findings alongside the image; an X-ray does not show every tendon, ligament, or muscle problem. Depending on the question, another scan may be more informative.

Ask the radiology service whether you need a referral and which clinicians may provide one. Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, and mention previous images so unnecessary repeat views can be considered. Wear clothing that can be adjusted around the body region and remove jewellery or metal objects as directed. Follow any centre-specific instructions and bring your identification and referral details.

After an injury, seek urgent assessment if a limb looks deformed, you cannot bear weight or use it, there is heavy bleeding, or the hand or foot becomes cold, pale, blue, or numb. Severe pain with rapidly increasing swelling also needs prompt care. These signs may require immediate treatment rather than waiting for a routine X-ray slot.

Ask what the X-ray is expected to clarify and whether views of another area are needed. Check whether a different scan would better assess soft tissue. Ask how the result will reach the treating clinician, when it will be reviewed, and what symptoms should prompt earlier reassessment.
