Do you need a referral for a musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to examine tendons, muscles, ligaments, fluid-filled areas, and some nerves near the skin. The examiner can watch a structure move, which may help assess a tendon or joint during motion. A referral identifies the painful area and the suspected problem, helping the radiology or sports-medicine service select the right examination. Ultrasound cannot show every deep structure, so another test may sometimes be suggested.

Call the centre before booking and ask whether it accepts direct appointments or needs a request from a doctor, physiotherapist, or specialist. Describe the body region and bring prior reports or images if requested. Wear clothing that allows access to the area being examined. Most examinations do not require special preparation, but follow any instructions given for a specific region or procedure.

Seek prompt care for a painful limb that is suddenly cold, pale, markedly swollen, or weak, or for an injury with deformity or an open wound. Fever with a hot, red, swollen joint also needs timely medical assessment. Do not rely on a routine ultrasound booking when symptoms are rapidly worsening or function has suddenly changed.

Ask whether ultrasound can answer the clinical question or whether MRI, X-ray, or another test is more suitable. Confirm which structure will be examined, whether movement will be assessed, and who will explain the report. Ask what changes should lead you to seek review before the appointment.
