Do you need a referral for a musculoskeletal MRI?

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to show soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, nerves, and bone marrow. The referral describes the body region, symptoms, previous injury, and the question the scan should answer. This helps the radiology team choose an appropriate protocol and decide whether contrast or a different test is needed. The referral does not by itself mean that surgery or another treatment will be required.

Check with the imaging centre whether your request must come from a specialist, primary-care clinician, or another authorised professional. Tell the centre about implanted devices, metal fragments, hearing implants, pregnancy, kidney disease, and previous contrast reactions. Remove metal items as instructed and ask about food or drink restrictions. If you feel anxious in enclosed spaces, mention it while booking so the team can discuss practical support.

Do not wait for a routine MRI after a serious injury with deformity, an open wound, rapidly increasing swelling, or inability to use the limb. New bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the groin, or worsening weakness with back pain require urgent assessment. These symptoms may need immediate examination rather than an outpatient scan alone.

Ask what the MRI is looking for and whether an earlier examination or another scan is more useful. Confirm the exact body region, whether contrast is planned, and what safety checks apply to your implants or medical history. Ask when and how the report will be reviewed with you.
