Do you need a referral for a musculoskeletal CT scan?

CT uses X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images, particularly useful for bones, joints, complex fractures, and areas that need three-dimensional planning. The referral tells the radiology team which body region and clinical question should be examined. A clinician also considers whether an X-ray, MRI, ultrasound, or another assessment would answer the question with less exposure to radiation or better soft-tissue detail.

Ask the imaging centre whether it accepts a referral from your treating clinician and which details it needs. Tell the referring team about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, previous reactions to contrast material, kidney problems, and medicines or allergies. Not every musculoskeletal CT uses contrast. Follow the centre's instructions about eating, drinking, clothing, and bringing earlier images. Keep the referral and appointment details available when you attend.

Seek urgent assessment after a major injury with visible deformity, uncontrolled bleeding, severe swelling, or inability to use the limb. Sudden limb weakness, new loss of sensation, or a cold or pale hand or foot also needs prompt care. An imaging appointment should not delay emergency evaluation when these signs are present.

Ask what the CT is intended to show, whether contrast is planned, and whether another scan would be more suitable. Clarify which body area will be scanned, how the result will be shared, and whether you should continue normal medicines. You can also ask what symptoms should prompt earlier review while waiting.
