Do you need a referral for microneedling?

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled punctures in the skin. It may be provided in cosmetic dermatology or another clinical setting, and booking requirements vary by provider. A self-booked appointment may be available, but that does not replace a suitability assessment.

During assessment, the clinician should discuss your aim, skin type, active acne or infection, eczema or psoriasis, tendency to form raised scars, recent procedures, and medicines that affect healing or bleeding. They can also explain whether the planned device and needle depth are appropriate for the area being treated.

Ask the clinic whether you can book directly, who performs the procedure, and whether a referral, consultation, or photographs are needed. Tell them about cold sores, allergies, prescription creams, isotretinoin use, and any history of slow healing or prominent scars. The clinician may change the timing or plan when the skin barrier is irritated.

Choose a provider who gives clear instructions for cleansing, sun exposure, makeup, and aftercare. Avoid microneedling over broken, infected, or actively inflamed skin until it has been assessed. Follow the clinic’s preparation advice and do not conceal a medical condition simply to keep an appointment.

Contact a clinician if redness, warmth, swelling, or pain keeps worsening instead of settling, or if the treated skin develops pus, spreading redness, fever, or marked tenderness. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness, or widespread hives. Eye pain or vision change after treatment near the face requires urgent assessment.

Ask what problem microneedling is intended to address, which device and depth will be used, and how the skin will be prepared. Ask about expected redness, healing time, sun protection, skincare restrictions, infection precautions, and signs that need review. Confirm who to contact outside clinic hours and whether your medical history means a referral is required.
