Do you need a referral for lung lobectomy?

Hospital access rules differ. A respiratory doctor, oncologist, primary care clinician or another specialist may initiate the referral, although some centres accept direct appointment requests. Booking an appointment does not establish that lobectomy is the right operation.

Lung lobectomy removes one lobe of a lung. Before recommending it, the surgical team needs to understand what is being treated, where it is located, whether surgery can remove it appropriately and how well your heart and lungs are likely to tolerate the procedure.

The review can involve chest imaging, tissue results when a biopsy has been taken, breathing tests and other health assessments. The surgeon also explains the planned surgical approach, possible alternatives and the recovery considerations that apply to your case.

Contact the thoracic surgery clinic you intend to attend. Ask which clinician can refer you, whether the referral needs a specific diagnosis, and which test results must arrive before the appointment. If you are already seeing a lung or cancer specialist, their office can often coordinate the clinical summary and records.

Prepare a medicine and allergy list, details of heart or lung conditions, prior surgery information, imaging reports and the original scan files if requested. Continue usual care while the referral is processed. New symptoms should be reported to your current clinical team rather than saved for the surgical visit.

Get urgent medical help for severe or sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up more than small streaks of blood, blue or grey lips, fainting or confusion. These symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of the status of a referral.

After a lobectomy, use the surgical team's contact instructions for worsening breathing, fever, increasing wound redness or drainage, uncontrolled pain or new leg swelling. Call emergency services for severe symptoms rather than waiting for a routine follow-up.

Ask why lobectomy is being considered, what other approaches fit the diagnosis, which tests are still needed and how your breathing may be affected. You can also ask who will coordinate cancer treatment, how medicines should be managed before surgery, what support is available after discharge and which symptoms require a direct call.
