Do You Need a Referral for Lipoma Removal?

Referral requirements vary between clinics and health plans. A direct appointment with dermatologic surgery may be possible, but removal should not be planned from appearance alone. The clinician will ask how long the lump has been present, whether it is growing or painful, and whether it affects movement or clothing. Examination helps distinguish a typical soft fatty lump from a mass needing imaging, another specialist, or a different procedure.

Ask the clinic whether you need a referral, photographs, or a primary-care assessment. Record changes in size, firmness, tenderness, skin colour, or mobility, and bring your medicines and surgical history. Discuss local anaesthetic, incision placement, wound care, possible scarring, specimen testing, and what happens if the lump is not a lipoma. Do not squeeze or cut the lump yourself.

Seek medical assessment sooner if a lump grows quickly, becomes firm or fixed, causes persistent pain, changes the overlying skin, bleeds, or is associated with fever or unexplained weight loss. After removal, contact the surgical team for spreading redness, pus, fever, wound opening, uncontrolled bleeding, or pain that is worsening instead of settling. Sudden severe symptoms require urgent care.

Ask how confident the clinician is about the diagnosis, whether imaging is needed, whether the tissue will be examined, where the scar will sit, and how activity should be limited while the wound heals. Confirm who handles unexpected findings or recurrence.
