A lactation consultation can address latch, feeding positions, nipple pain, expressing milk, supply concerns, feeding patterns, and combination feeding. The professional may watch a feed, ask about the baby’s wet and dirty nappies, and review weight information when available. You can seek support before birth, soon after delivery, or later when a new problem appears. A referral is administrative and is separate from whether your concern deserves help.

Contact the maternity unit, paediatric service, midwife, or lactation professional and ask whether direct booking is available. Have your baby’s age, feeding pattern, birth history, current medicines, and any weight records ready. If you are in hospital, ask the bedside team how to request a visit. Write down the feeding concern and what you have already tried so the appointment can focus on practical changes.

Seek prompt medical advice if your baby is unusually sleepy, feeding poorly, has noticeably fewer wet nappies, or appears dehydrated. Contact a clinician for breast redness with fever, severe breast pain, or a worsening tender area. Urgent care is needed for breathing difficulty, marked weakness, or a baby who cannot feed. A lactation visit can support feeding, but it does not replace medical assessment.
