Do you need a referral for inhaler therapy?

Inhaler therapy delivers medicine into the airways. The right inhaler depends on your symptoms, examination, previous diagnoses, and how often you need relief. A clinician may check your breathing, listen to your chest, review triggers, and watch your inhaler technique. Some people need a reliever inhaler, while others need regular anti-inflammatory treatment or a combination.

A general practitioner can often begin this assessment. Pulmonology review may be useful when symptoms remain difficult to control, the diagnosis is uncertain, or breathing tests need specialist interpretation.

Book a general-practice appointment and bring every inhaler you use, including one you bought or received elsewhere. Describe wheezing, cough, chest tightness, night waking, exercise limitation, and how frequently you use relief medicine. Ask the clinician to demonstrate and then check your technique; poor technique can leave medicine in the mouth instead of the lungs.

Do not start, stop, share, or change an inhaler without clinical advice. Follow the prescribed schedule and ask how to use a spacer if one is recommended.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to speak comfortably, or rapidly worsening wheeze. If a prescribed reliever is not helping as directed, treat that as a warning and seek prompt care rather than repeatedly taking extra doses without advice.
