Do you need a referral for induction of labour?

Induction starts labour with medicines or procedures when the obstetric team believes birth may be safer or more appropriate than continuing the pregnancy. Reasons can include concerns about your health, your baby’s wellbeing, or pregnancy progress. Your obstetrician or midwife reviews your history, examination and monitoring, explains the proposed method and discusses your preferences. If you receive antenatal care outside the hospital where induction will happen, that team coordinates the hospital referral and admission plan.

Ask your midwife or obstetrician where induction will take place, when to attend, what to bring and how long the process may take. Confirm which medicines you should continue and who to call if contractions begin before the planned date. Tell the maternity team about allergies, previous caesarean birth, reduced fetal movement, bleeding, fluid loss or any change in your health. Keep your maternity records and contact details available.

Do not wait for a referral or scheduled induction if you have reduced or absent fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe abdominal pain, regular painful contractions, severe headache, visual changes or sudden swelling. Contact your maternity unit immediately for guidance, or seek emergency help if you feel seriously unwell. These symptoms require direct assessment.

Ask why induction is recommended, what alternatives exist, which method is planned, how your baby will be monitored, and what happens if the first method does not start labour. Ask who to call at any hour if symptoms change.
