Do you need a referral for ICSI?

ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, is a laboratory step used within an assisted reproduction cycle. A reproductive-medicine specialist first reviews both partners’ history, fertility tests, medications and pregnancy goals. The team may discuss ovarian stimulation, egg collection, sperm collection, embryo transfer and alternatives. ICSI is not chosen from a referral alone: the specialist explains whether it is appropriate for the fertilisation problem and the planned treatment pathway.

Ask your family doctor, gynaecologist or fertility clinician whether a referral is required for the centre you prefer. If direct consultation is available, ask what records are useful, such as semen analysis, hormone testing, ultrasound reports and prior treatment summaries. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention previous pregnancies, operations or fertility treatment. Confirm which partner needs to attend and whether both people will be assessed.

Referral planning is not urgent in the same way as a medical emergency. Seek prompt care for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever, fainting or symptoms of ovarian stimulation such as marked abdominal swelling, vomiting or breathlessness. Contact your fertility team quickly if these occur during treatment or after egg collection.

Ask why ICSI is being considered, what tests are still needed, how the cycle is coordinated, what medicines are involved, and who to contact outside clinic hours. Ask when the referral or consultation should be arranged if your cycle timing matters.
