Do you need a referral for hysterectomy?

A referral connects you with an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist who can review your symptoms, examination findings and imaging. The specialist may discuss alternatives, explain the type of hysterectomy being considered, and check issues such as anaemia, medicines, previous operations and future fertility wishes. A referral is not the same as consent or a decision to have surgery. It starts an assessment so the team can decide whether hysterectomy fits your circumstances.

Start with your family doctor, gynaecologist or the clinic where your symptoms were assessed. Ask whether they can refer you directly and whether the receiving hospital needs a specific form, recent test result or authorisation. Bring a list of medicines, allergies, previous procedures and the pattern of bleeding or pelvic pain. If you already have a specialist appointment, ask the clinic whether a referral is required before attending.

Do not wait for routine referral paperwork if you have very heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Seek urgent medical assessment so these problems can be evaluated safely. Referral rules should never delay emergency care.
