Do you need a referral for hydrotherapy?

Short answer
You may need a referral for hydrotherapy, although some providers accept direct bookings after a safety assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why an assessment comes first
Hydrotherapy, also called aquatic therapy, uses exercises in a supervised pool. Warm water and buoyancy can reduce loading on painful joints while allowing controlled movement, but pool treatment is not suitable for everyone. A physiotherapist considers your diagnosis, balance, walking ability, wounds, skin health, heart or breathing problems, and ability to enter and leave the pool. The assessment helps set exercises that match your strength and movement rather than treating the water as a cure on its own.
How to get started
Ask the hydrotherapy provider whether direct access is available. If not, request a referral from your primary-care doctor, orthopaedic clinician, or physiotherapist. Share relevant scans, operation details, medicines, and information about falls or dizziness. Ask about pool access, changing facilities, what to wear, and whether an accompanying person is needed. A referral may also be required if treatment is being arranged through an insurer or hospital pathway.
When to seek prompt care
Delay pool treatment and seek medical advice if you have fever with a new swollen joint, an open or infected wound, sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or a new inability to walk. These symptoms require medical assessment before exercise in water.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether hydrotherapy fits your diagnosis, what movements should be avoided, how often progress will be reviewed, and what home exercises can support the pool programme.

Questions people ask
Is hydrotherapy the same as swimming?
No. Hydrotherapy is a planned exercise programme led or supervised by a trained therapist, using the pool environment for a specific rehabilitation goal.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Usually not. Tell the therapist about your water confidence and mobility so the session can be planned safely with suitable depth and support.
