Do you need a referral for HPV vaccination?

HPV vaccination helps the immune system recognise selected types of human papillomavirus. It is preventive: it does not clear an HPV infection already present and does not replace cervical screening. The appropriate schedule can depend on age at vaccination, immune status and whether earlier doses were received.

A primary-care clinic, school or community vaccination service may offer direct booking. A gynaecology or specialist service may instead require a referral, particularly when there is a complex medical history or uncertainty about previous vaccination.

Contact the vaccination provider and ask whether a referral is required, which vaccine schedule they use and whether they need documentation of earlier doses. Bring your vaccination record if available, and tell the clinician about allergies, immune conditions, current medicines, pregnancy or a previous reaction to a vaccine.

Vaccination is usually given in the upper arm. Remain at the clinic for the observation period they recommend, and ask how later doses should be scheduled if you need more than one appointment.

Tell the vaccinator before vaccination if you have been unwell, are pregnant, have a severe allergy history or previously fainted after an injection. After vaccination, seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, or collapse. A sore arm or mild fever can occur, but contact the provider if symptoms are severe or concerning.
