Do you need a referral for a growth scan?

A growth scan is an ultrasound used later in pregnancy to assess the baby's size and growth pattern. It can also review amniotic fluid, the placenta and, when needed, blood flow measurements. A midwife, obstetrician or maternal-fetal medicine clinician may request it when there is a clinical reason, such as concern about growth, a pregnancy complication or a need to monitor an existing condition.

The scan is different from a routine appointment because the timing and measurements are selected for your situation. A referral helps the imaging team understand why the scan was requested and which measurements are needed.

Start with the clinician or maternity service providing your pregnancy care. Ask whether they will send the referral and whether the scan must be booked with a particular ultrasound or maternal-fetal medicine service. If you are booking privately, ask the provider whether a doctor or midwife request is required before you attend.

Have your estimated due date, pregnancy notes, previous scan reports and any relevant medical information available. Confirm whether you need a full bladder or any other preparation; many later-pregnancy scans have little preparation, but the clinic's instructions take priority.

Do not wait for a routine growth-scan referral if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache with vision changes, or a noticeable reduction in your baby's usual movements. Contact your maternity team or urgent pregnancy service promptly so they can decide what assessment you need.

Ask why the growth scan is recommended, when it should happen, who will send the referral, and whether the result will change your follow-up plan. You can also ask when and how the report will be shared and whom to contact if you cannot obtain an appointment.
