Do You Need a Referral for a GP Consultation?

A general practitioner assesses new symptoms, ongoing concerns, medicines, and preventive health needs. The doctor may examine you, arrange tests, provide treatment, or refer you onward when a specialist opinion is appropriate. You do not usually need to decide which specialty you need before making the appointment.

Contact the clinic and ask whether self-booking is available. Have your identification, current medicines, allergies, and a short description of the concern ready. Ask whether the appointment is in person or remote and whether a referral or prior approval is needed for your particular arrangement. Bring previous reports if they relate to the problem.

Do not wait for a routine GP booking if you have severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, sudden weakness on one side, fainting, heavy bleeding, or a rapidly worsening serious illness. Use local emergency services for an emergency. For a worrying but non-emergency problem, request the earliest suitable clinical assessment.

Ask what may be causing the symptom, which examination or tests are useful, what treatment options fit your situation, and which changes should prompt earlier review. You can also ask whether a specialist referral is needed and what information should accompany it.
