Do you need a referral for gait analysis?

Gait analysis examines how you walk or run. A physiotherapist or podiatrist may observe your posture, foot placement, joint movement, balance, and stride. The assessment can help explain a movement concern, guide exercise selection, or inform footwear and activity advice. It does not automatically mean that you need treatment or that a serious condition has been found.

Ask the chosen clinic whether self-referral is accepted and whether an assessment must be requested by a doctor. If another clinician has assessed you, bring their notes, imaging reports, and a list of activities that trigger symptoms. Wear comfortable clothing and bring the shoes you use for walking, work, or sport. Tell the assessor about pain, previous injuries, neurological symptoms, and any recent change in your walking pattern.

Arrange prompt medical assessment after a sudden inability to walk, a major injury, new weakness, loss of sensation, severe swelling, or a foot that becomes cold or changes colour. Gait analysis is not a substitute for urgent care. A clinician can decide whether examination or imaging should come before movement testing.
