Do you need a referral for fracture fixation surgery?

Fixation surgery holds a broken bone with hardware such as plates, screws, rods, or pins. The surgeon considers the bone involved, fracture alignment and stability, skin and soft-tissue condition, circulation, nerve function, and your wider health. Some fractures can be treated without surgery; others need an operation to restore alignment or support function.

You cannot safely arrange this operation from a symptom description alone. Imaging and a hands-on assessment guide the decision. Referral may come through an emergency department, primary doctor, or another clinician who has identified a fracture.

If a fracture is suspected, protect the limb, avoid unnecessary weight or movement, and obtain medical assessment promptly. Take medication and allergy details, previous imaging, and information about any blood-thinning medicine. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, splint care, and transport if surgery is being considered.

Ask the surgical team which treatment choices are available, what recovery restrictions may apply, and how rehabilitation will be arranged. Do not remove a splint or alter immobilisation unless instructed.

Go to emergency care for an obvious deformity, an open wound, uncontrolled bleeding, a limb that is cold or changing colour, severe swelling, worsening numbness, or inability to move the fingers or toes. A high-impact injury or severe pain that is not settling also needs urgent assessment.

Ask: Is the fracture stable without surgery? What would fixation achieve? Which device would be used? What are the alternatives? How long will the limb need protection, and when can physiotherapy or normal activity begin?
