Do you need a referral for food intolerance testing?

Food intolerance symptoms can include bloating, abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits or nausea, but similar complaints can have many causes. A clinician reviews the timing of symptoms, foods eaten, medical history and medicines before recommending a test. Some commercial panels do not answer the same question as a medically guided assessment, so interpretation matters.

Book with a general-practice clinician or the testing provider and ask whether a referral is required. Keep a food and symptom diary that records portions, timing and symptoms without deliberately provoking a reaction. Bring your medicines and previous results. Do not remove several food groups for a long period without advice, because this can make nutrition harder and obscure the pattern.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, fainting or rapidly spreading hives after eating. Arrange prompt medical review for persistent vomiting, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, severe pain, dehydration or symptoms that wake you repeatedly at night.

Ask whether your pattern suggests intolerance, allergy or another digestive condition, and which test can distinguish them. Discuss whether you should continue eating the suspected food before testing, how to protect nutritional intake, and when symptoms should be reviewed.
