Do you need a referral for flu vaccination?

The vaccinator checks your health history before giving the vaccine. Mention previous vaccine reactions, serious allergies, pregnancy, immune conditions and medicines that affect immunity. Tell the clinician if you are currently unwell. The vaccine is intended to reduce the risk of influenza illness, but it does not treat an infection that is already causing symptoms.

Contact a family-medicine or general-practice clinic and ask whether an appointment is required. Take your identification and vaccination history if available. Wear clothing that allows access to the upper arm, and remain at the clinic for the observation period recommended by the vaccinator. Follow the clinic's advice about the timing of other vaccines or planned travel.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse or severe dizziness after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a high fever, worsening illness or symptoms that concern you. If you have flu-like symptoms before your appointment, ask whether to postpone vaccination and how to manage the illness.

Ask whether the vaccine is appropriate with your allergies, pregnancy, chronic conditions or current medicines. You can also ask about expected arm soreness, how long mild symptoms may last, and what signs would make a reaction unusual.
