Fine needle aspiration uses a thin needle to collect cells or fluid from a lump or abnormal area. A referral identifies the area to sample and provides clinical details, examination findings, imaging reports, medicine information, and the question the sample should help answer. The receiving team then determines whether aspiration is suitable and whether image guidance is needed.

Ask the procedure clinic what referral form and recent reports it requires. If a referral is necessary, contact the clinician who assessed the lump or ordered your imaging. Share a current medication list and mention blood-thinning medicines, allergies, pregnancy, previous procedures in the same area, or any difficulty lying in the required position. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the treating team gives specific instructions.

A new or changing lump deserves clinical assessment even if the aspiration appointment has not yet been arranged. Seek urgent help for rapid swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, severe bleeding, faintness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. After aspiration, contact the treating service for swelling that is quickly worsening, persistent bleeding, fever, spreading redness, or pain that is becoming more intense.

Clarify how the sample is handled, when and how results will be explained, whether another type of biopsy could be needed, and who to call about problems after the appointment.
