Some aesthetic providers accept direct bookings, whereas a hospital or insurer-linked service may request a referral. The injection is intended for selected areas of localised fat, and a consultation should confirm whether the visible fullness is suitable for this approach.

The clinician should examine the area, discuss the product being used, expected swelling and tenderness, possible alternatives, and the number and timing of appointments they recommend. Tell them about allergies, medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, previous injections, and conditions affecting the skin or nerves.

Ask the provider whether self-referral is accepted and who will prescribe and administer the injection. Use a regulated clinical setting and request clear aftercare instructions. Do not inject an area with an active rash, wound, or infection until it has been assessed. Bring your medical history and ask what to do with medicines that affect bleeding; never change prescribed treatment on your own.

Before treatment, seek assessment for a new lump, painful swelling, unexplained asymmetry, or inflamed skin rather than assuming it is a cosmetic fat deposit. After treatment, contact the provider promptly for worsening redness, severe pain, spreading swelling, skin colour change, difficulty swallowing, facial weakness, or breathing problems.
