Do you need a referral for endoscopic spine surgery?

Endoscopic spine surgery uses a small camera and instruments through a limited access route to treat selected spinal problems. It is not suitable for every cause of back or neck pain. A spine surgeon reviews your symptoms, neurological findings, scans, previous treatment, and general health before discussing it.

A referral can provide the clinical history and imaging that help the specialist prepare. It does not mean surgery is already decided. The consultation may compare non-surgical care, other procedures, and the expected recovery for your particular spinal level and diagnosis.

Ask the clinic whether you need a referral, recent imaging, or a report from a primary-care or specialist clinician. Explain the location of pain, radiation into an arm or leg, numbness, weakness, and what treatments you have tried.

Bring scan images or the radiology report when requested, along with medicines and information about previous operations. Ask who will coordinate pre-operative checks if surgery is recommended and how rehabilitation will be planned.

Get urgent medical assessment for new or worsening limb weakness, numbness around the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever with severe back pain, or back pain after significant injury. These warning signs require prompt evaluation and should not be managed by waiting for a routine surgical referral.
