Do you need a referral for an EMG and nerve conduction study?

Nerve conduction testing measures how electrical signals travel along nerves, while EMG assesses electrical activity in selected muscles. Together, they can help a neurologist or physical-medicine specialist investigate problems such as numbness, weakness, tingling, or suspected nerve compression.

A referral gives the testing clinician the reason for the study and relevant examination findings. It can also identify the body area to test and any questions the report should address. The test is interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination, rather than as a stand-alone diagnosis.

Ask the clinic whether a referral is mandatory, who may issue it, and whether the referring clinician should specify a suspected problem. Tell the service about pacemaker or implanted electrical devices, blood-thinning medicine, a bleeding disorder, or skin problems at the test site.

Wear clothing that allows access to the area being examined and avoid applying creams or oils there on the day unless the service advises otherwise. Bring prior reports and a current medicine list. The clinician will explain the electrical stimulation and muscle-needle parts before starting.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden weakness, new trouble speaking, severe breathing difficulty, loss of bladder or bowel control, or rapidly worsening numbness. These symptoms should not wait for an outpatient nerve study. Contact the testing service about unexpected bleeding, persistent swelling, or worsening pain after the examination.

Ask: What question should this study answer? Which nerves and muscles will be tested? Do I need to change any medicine? When and how will the results be explained?
