Do You Need a Referral for Dupilumab Treatment?

Dupilumab is a prescription biologic used for selected inflammatory skin conditions, including some forms of eczema. It works by blocking specific immune signals involved in inflammation. A dermatologist reviews the diagnosis, previous treatments, other medical conditions, medicines, and vaccination history before recommending it. The treatment plan may include injections, follow-up checks, and guidance about skin care; a referral alone does not mean the medicine will be prescribed.

Ask your primary-care clinician or dermatology clinic whether a referral is required and whether any prior authorisation applies. Bring a list of treatments you have tried, how your skin responds, and any history of eye symptoms, allergies, asthma, or recurrent infections. Seek urgent medical help for rapidly worsening skin with facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, fever, or signs of a serious infection. During treatment, report new eye pain or vision changes promptly. A flare that is distressing or disrupting sleep also merits timely review so the treatment plan can be adjusted safely.
