Do you need a referral for dry needling?

Dry needling uses fine needles to target selected muscles or trigger points as part of a broader physiotherapy plan. A referral is not the same as clinical suitability: a physiotherapist still needs to understand your symptoms, medical history, medicines, and treatment goals before deciding whether this approach fits.

Some clinics accept direct bookings, while others ask for a referral from a doctor or another clinician. Administrative requirements can also differ between providers and payment arrangements, so the clinic can give the most useful answer for your appointment.

Contact the clinic and ask whether self-referral is accepted, who performs the treatment, and whether an initial physiotherapy assessment is included. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, bleeding problems, a bleeding disorder, medicines that affect clotting, a weakened immune system, skin infection, or a strong fear of needles.

Bring any relevant scan reports, medication list, and details of previous treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicine just to prepare for dry needling; ask the prescriber whether any change is needed.

Seek urgent medical care for new severe weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly worsening pain. These symptoms need medical assessment rather than a routine dry-needling appointment. After treatment, seek advice for spreading redness, increasing swelling, fever, chest pain, or breathing difficulty.
