Do You Need a Referral for Dermoscopy?

Dermoscopy, also called dermatoscopy, is a close examination of a mole or other skin mark with a specialised handheld device. It gives the clinician a magnified, illuminated view of structures that may not be visible during an ordinary visual check. The examination is usually non-invasive and does not remove the mark. A dermatologist can decide whether the appearance is reassuring, needs monitoring, or warrants another procedure.

Contact the dermatology clinic and ask whether it accepts self-booked dermoscopy appointments. Have the location of the mark, how long it has been present, and any recent changes ready to describe. If a general doctor has already examined you, bring that note or referral and any photographs used for comparison. Ask whether the visit includes a full skin examination or only assessment of the named mark, because these may be arranged differently.

Arrange a timely medical assessment for a mark that is changing in size, shape, colour, or surface, or one that repeatedly bleeds, crusts, or does not heal. New persistent marks also deserve assessment. These features do not establish a diagnosis, but they make clinical review more appropriate than relying on a self-check or photograph alone.

Ask who will perform the examination, whether the whole skin needs checking, how images will be stored for comparison, and what happens if the dermoscopic view is unclear. You can also ask when you should return for review and whether a biopsy or removal would be considered if the mark has concerning features.
