Do You Need a Referral for Dermal Fillers?

Many aesthetic providers begin with a direct consultation, while some clinics or healthcare systems request a referral. A referral is separate from the safety assessment: the injector still needs to review your anatomy, previous filler or facial procedures, allergies, skin conditions, medicines, and expectations. The discussion should cover the proposed product, injection area, alternatives, aftercare, and how complications would be managed.

Ask whether the clinic accepts self-booking, who will inject the filler, and what qualifications and follow-up arrangements apply. Give a complete history of previous injections, dental work, facial surgery, cold sores, allergies, and medicines or supplements that affect bleeding. Do not book over an active skin infection or unexplained swelling. Take time to understand the plan; a consultation does not commit you to treatment.

Before injections, obtain medical advice for a new facial lump, active infection, unexplained rash, or sudden facial weakness. After filler, urgent assessment is needed for severe or increasing pain, pale or mottled skin, unusual coolness, vision changes, weakness, or rapidly worsening swelling. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue or throat requires emergency care.
