Do you need a referral for a CT scan?

The request helps the radiology team select the body area, scanning method, and whether contrast may be useful. Contact the imaging centre before attending to confirm which clinician can order the examination and what paperwork it accepts.

Computed tomography uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images. The clinical question guides the radiologist toward a suitable protocol and helps avoid scanning an irrelevant area.

Some examinations use contrast given by mouth or into a vein to make particular structures easier to assess. The team may need information about kidney health, allergies, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, medicines, and previous reactions before deciding how to proceed.

A scan request does not establish a diagnosis. A radiologist interprets the images, and the clinician who requested the test explains how the findings relate to your symptoms or treatment plan.

Check that the order names the intended examination and clinical reason, then ask radiology whether it needs the original document, prior authorisation, recent laboratory results, or earlier images. Administrative requirements differ, so verify them directly with the centre.

Before the appointment, disclose allergies, kidney problems, diabetes treatment, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and any previous contrast reaction. Follow only the centre's instructions about food, drink, and medicines; do not stop prescribed treatment independently.

Bring relevant reports or image discs from earlier scans. Comparing old and new images can help the radiologist judge whether a finding has changed.

Do not delay emergency care while trying to obtain an outpatient CT referral. Sudden weakness on one side, difficulty speaking, severe breathing trouble, major injury, fainting, confusion, or abrupt severe pain requires urgent clinical assessment; the emergency team will decide which imaging is needed.

After contrast, tell staff immediately about breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a rapidly spreading rash. For milder symptoms after leaving, use the imaging centre's instructions or contact a clinician for advice.

Confirm what question the CT is intended to answer, which body area will be scanned, whether contrast is planned, what preparation applies, when the report should be available, and who will discuss the result. Mention earlier imaging so the team can arrange comparison when possible.
