Do you need a referral for bowel resection?

A primary-care doctor, gastroenterologist, oncologist, or another treating specialist may direct you to the surgical team. Even when self-booking is available, the surgeon must determine whether an operation is appropriate and plan its extent.

A referral passes your clinical concern and relevant records to the surgical service; it is not approval for an operation. The surgeon reviews the reason for surgery, imaging, endoscopy or biopsy results when relevant, medicines, previous operations, and general fitness for anaesthesia.

Bowel resection removes a diseased part of the intestine and reconnects or redirects the bowel as the clinical situation requires. Planning may involve surgical oncology and other specialists, particularly when cancer is suspected or confirmed.

Contact the hospital or surgical clinic and ask whether it accepts direct appointments or needs a referral letter. Request the exact documents needed before the visit so missing records do not delay assessment.

Bring your scan reports and images, endoscopy and pathology reports if available, a medicine list, allergy details, and a summary of previous abdominal procedures. Do not stop blood thinners or other prescribed medicines unless the treating team gives specific instructions.

If surgery is proposed, clarify the reason, alternatives, expected bowel changes, whether a stoma might be considered, preparation, recovery arrangements, and who to contact if symptoms change.

Do not wait for a routine referral if you develop severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, confusion, or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent medical assessment because these features can signal obstruction, significant bleeding, infection, or another acute problem.

After an operation, follow the surgical team's discharge instructions. Urgent review is warranted for rapidly worsening pain, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding, marked wound swelling or discharge, new breathlessness, collapse, or a sudden decline in alertness.

Ask which bowel segment may be removed, what findings support surgery, whether more tests are needed, how your medicines should be managed, and how the procedure could affect eating and bowel function. Also confirm the admission route and which clinician will coordinate follow-up.
